Ingrown toenail is a painful condition that occurs due to nail growing unevenly. This uneven growth can damage the skin and grow deeper into the toe causing pain and infection.
This condition can be caused by many factors:
- Incorrect nail cutting technique.
- Bad foot posture
- Narrow shoes
- Trauma to the nail
- Steel cap boots
- Sports related activities
- Hereditary
- Shape of the nail (curved nail)
- Fungal nail
At Your Foot And Ankle clinic in the Hills District and Hawkesbury Sydney we have been diagnosing and treating Painful ingrown toenails for many years. Our Podiatrist will assess and recommend the right treatment for you. Treatments can include conservative treatment where we carefully remove the offending part of the nail without the use of local Anesthetic. This technique is usually used in early stages of this condition.
Advance stages of ingrown toenail is when conservative treatment has not been successful or unable to be performed. In this case we carry out a minor surgical procedure to remove the Painful ingrown toenail under local anesthetic (LA). Once LA is used it stops your ability to feel any pain. The offending side of the nail is completely removed from its root and the site is then cauterised (burnt) with a special chemical. This procedure has shown to have high success rate.
